These four images were selected from the Decordova Museum. All four were photographed by Claire Beckett, and are titled "Simulating Iraq", Claire Beckett was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and earned an MFA in Photography at Mass College of Art. Her series of Simulating Iraq is a representation of what soldiers in Iraq will see. She created these images in California at a military base. The photos mimic the Iraqi and Afghani soldiers and the war setting they will be seen in as preparation for military deployment.
For the majority of the photos, there is not strong contrast. The images are all over exposed purposely to simulate the actual environment of Iraq and Afghanistan. Every image in the collage is focused on the person because they are the main subject in the image. The depth of field is shallow because it represents the open desert in the location they are in, and attracts your eye to the people's faces. Each picture is asymmetrical, and the people are positioned on the right side of each image. The clear focal point in each picture are the people because they simulate the soldiers on the battlefield.
The pieces that Claire has put together make me feel afraid about the dangers of war and everything that our soldiers volunteer to do so everyday people don't have to. The mood of the work is serious because war is a serious and dangerous environment. The pictures tell a story about the horrors of war, and the things our soldiers see on a daily basis. It is a realism piece, and evokes a response about the events and situations of war, The artist chose to make this piece to unmask the myths of war and show how truly dangerous and intimidating. I personally like this piece because it shows the sacrifice soldiers make to keep us all safe.
